If you do not pass your exam on the first attempt, your retake options will depend on the course/exam level:

If you don’t pass the retake exam, you may try a third time after a 10-day waiting period. The waiting period for a fourth attempt and any additional attempts is 30 days.

You can purchase an exam retake within your Learning Plan. The ‘retake’ button will be located next to your exam. Clicking this button will take you to our payment platform, where you can purchase your retake exam.

The retake fee is $50 for most exams; however, the Implementing SAFe exam has a retake fee of $250.

No, you cannot retake or purchase retakes for SAFe 4 or SAFe 5 exams. You will not be able to access your SAFe 4 or SAFe 5 exam or learning plan. If you want to earn the Certification, you will need to take a new course. You can browse for courses on our Training Calendar. Exam Attempts and Retake Policy Update (Effective April 14, 2026)

We’ve updated our exam retake policy, effective April 14, 2026. This new policy applies to all Scaled Agile certification exams, with the exception of sample tests, practice tests, Agile Software Engineering, SAFe for Hardware, and SAFe for Hardware Teams courses, unless otherwise specified.

For the following SAFe Foundational courses:

Please note that the retake fee for Implementing SAFe is $250, and $50 for all other exams mentioned above.

​Exception – Agile Software Engineering (ASE) and SAFe for Hardware courses include 20-question completion quizzes rather than a standard certification exam. These quizzes allow unlimited attempts, have no retake fees, and must be completed within a 45-minute time limit per attempt.

For the Proctored Scrum Master Exam, the retake fee is $495. This fee is charged for each failed attempt, meaning a new payment is required for every retake. After payment, additional attempts may be taken based on the number of prior attempts, with no deadline as long as the exam remains available. Candidates should refer to the individual exam page for specific pricing. Once an exam is successfully passed, no further attempts are permitted unless an updated version of the exam is released.

Do I need to purchase a retake if I have not taken the exam yet?

In some cases, yes. If your exam has expired, then you will need to purchase an exam retake to gain access to the exam, as you have not taken the exam within the allotted time as part of your course.

We implemented a change on November 4th, 2022, that grants access to paid learning plans regardless of renewal status. This means that once a retake is purchased, it will not expire so long as the exam is still offered. If you have any further questions, you can reach out to our support team at [email protected].

You do not need to have an active renewal to purchase a retake, as learning plans are available regardless of renewal status. You can earn your certification without a renewal; if you wish to do so, you will have access to the certification even without the renewal.
