SAFe® Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Policy

Purpose

The SAFe® Continuing Education Unit program ensures that an active SAFe® certification reflects current knowledge and capability after the initial certification is earned.

Certification demonstrates that an individual met the certification requirements at a specific point in time. Continuing education demonstrates that the certification holder continues to learn, apply, and engage with evolving practices throughout the certification lifecycle.

CEUs are therefore required for certification renewal, not for maintaining certification during its current active term.

1. Effective Date

Beginning October 1, 2027, CEUs will become part of the renewal requirements for designated SAFe® certifications.

3. CEU Definition

One CEU is awarded for one hour of qualifying continuing education activity.

4. Qualifying CEU Categories

Learning

Covers activities that develop knowledge relevant to the holder's certification, including courses, webinars, conferences, professional events, self-paced education, substantive reading, tutorials, and labs. The current guide already provides these examples.

  • Courses

  • Webinars

  • Conferences

  • Professional events

  • Self-paced education

  • Substantive reading

  • Tutorials

  • Labs

Community

Recognizes learning through participation, contribution, knowledge sharing, events, Communities of Practice, meetups, and SAFe Connect activity.

  • Community participation

  • Knowledge sharing

  • Communities of Practice

  • Meetups

  • SAFe Connect activity

  • Events

Professional Application

Recognizes development through applying relevant knowledge in actual professional settings, including teaching, experimentation, implementation, measurement, and workforce planning.

  • Applying relevant knowledge

  • Teaching

  • Experimentation

  • Implementation

  • Measurement

  • Workforce planning

An activity qualifies for CEUs when it contributes meaningfully to the certification holder's continued development in knowledge, skills, practices, or professional application relevant to the certification being renewed.

5. Category Distribution

Certification holders are encouraged to participate in at least two categories. Each category should comprise no more than 50% of the CEU total.

6. Paid vs. Free Activities

CEUs are based on qualifying professional development activity and are not dependent on whether the activity was purchased from Scaled.

Eligible activities include Scaled offerings, employer-provided learning, third-party education, professional events, independent learning, community contribution, and qualifying work-based application.

7. Multiple Certifications

A qualifying activity may be applied toward more than one active certification when the activity is substantively relevant to each certification.

8. CEU Reporting

Certification holders are responsible for recording:

  • activity name

  • completion date

  • category

  • provider/source, where applicable

  • number of CEUs claimed

  • brief description where the qualifying relationship isn't obvious

  • supporting documentation when available

9. Documentation

Course completion certificates, registration/attendance records, transcripts, event confirmations, agendas, links to published work, employer verification, teaching records, or other reasonable evidence demonstrating completion are all acceptable.

10. Audits

Certification holders may be selected for audit before or up to 1 year after the completion of the renewal. Individuals selected for audit may be asked to provide reasonable documentation supporting reported CEU activities.

11. Carryover

CEUs earned beyond the current renewal requirement not exceeding 50% of the requirement may be carried forward to the immediately following certification renewal cycle, up to the number of CEUs required for that certification.

12. Expired Certifications

Expired certification holders wishing to renew their certification during or after the transition period, October 1, 2026 - October 1, 2027, will be required to fulfill the CEU requirement associated with the reactivated certification by the completion of their renewal year.

13. What Does Not Qualify

Routine job duties that don't involve meaningful learning/application; passive exposure with no substantive professional-development component; duplicate reporting of the same activity; activities unrelated to the certification; administrative activities; or time spent solely preparing a CEU claim.

14. Renewal

Completion of the applicable CEU requirement is one component of certification renewal. CEUs do not replace other renewal requirements, including applicable renewal fees or other certification-specific requirements.

15. Certification Holder Responsibility

Certification holders are responsible for understanding their CEU requirement, completing qualifying activities during the applicable period, maintaining accurate records, submitting or reporting CEUs as required, and completing all renewal requirements by the applicable deadline.

Scaled is responsible for publishing clear requirements and providing reasonable access to information about qualifying activities and renewal.

16. Exceptions and Appeals

Certification holders may request review of CEU eligibility decisions, audit findings, extraordinary circumstances, accessibility issues, extended leave, military deployment, or other legitimate exceptions. An exception or appeal may be requested by contacting Customer Support and completing the Exception/Appeal form. Scaled will review it on a case-by-case basis.

17. Program Changes

Scaled may, in its sole discretion, change its CEU Policy without notice. Such changes will be posted on the Scaled website at scaledagile.com and may include, without limitation, adding or deleting applicable SAFe® certifications, modifying number of required CEUs or modifying the reporting requirements.
