As a SAFe® Practice Consultant (SPC), you are eligible to teach SAFe courses. We have created some useful tools to prepare you to train others on SAFe.
1. Course Delivery Enablements (CDEs) are an essential resource you will use as you prepare to teach a SAFe course for the first time. CDEs are a series of videos compiled in a learning plan. They will familiarize you with the course material and walk you through the activities and exercises so that you are comfortable running them in a class environment. Each Course Delivery Enablement also contains a validation exam designed to create an experience similar to what your learners will encounter when taking their certification exams. Please note you must pass the exam and be validated for each course before you can teach a class or be added as a trainer on a scheduled class.
To access the Course Delivery Enablement, please follow these instructions in SAFe Studio:
Click the Teach & Manage > Course Enablement tab.
Click the SAFe® Program Consultant box. (NOTE: These boxes are language-specific. If you wish to teach the course in a specific language, you will want to enable for it in that language.)
Select the course you intend to teach.
Click the About sub-tab.
Click the Register button.
2. Purchase licenses: this is a necessary step to be given access to the associated Courseware Kit.
You purchase licenses by following the below steps.
Click the Teach & Manage > Course Admin tab.
Click the License Management subheading.
Click the Purchase Licenses button. (Please note, this list only contains licenses for courses you are enabled to teach).
Select the License Type and Amount you wish to purchase
Checkout
NOTE: The courseware
3. Download the Courseware. In the Courseware Kit, you will find a detailed instructor's guide to familiarize yourself with the course materials. We recommend downloading the Courseware Kit at least one week before the class so that you will have time to prepare. Please note that to download the Courseware Kit, you must purchase at least one license, which will later be applied to one of the learners in your class.
You can download the Courseware Kit by following the below steps.
Click the Teach & Manage > Course Admin tab.
Click the My Courseware subheading
Click on the courseware that you wish to download
Click on Download in the new window that pops up
Agree to the Courseware License Agreement (This is mandatory; courseware cannot be used unless this agreement is accepted.)
Click the new Download button that is made available after accepting the agreement.
4a. Create the Course. Creating the course in our system will allow you to add students to the roster for the course and spend the licenses you’ve purchased.
To Create a Course, follow the steps below:
Click the Teach & Manage > Course Admin tab.
Click the My Courses subheading.
Click Add New and select the type of course you want to teach from the available options.
In the new window, select the Learning Plan you wish to teach. (Please note that this list will only contain the courses you are enabled to teach.)
Fill out the rest of the required fields with your information.
Click Save and View Course
4b. Create the Course in a non-English Language. When creating the course in a non-English language you will want to be sure that you have purchased the licenses for that language so you have access to the courseware and also that you set up the course with the correct learning plan with the target language listed in the title (seen below).
5. Upload the Roster. There are two ways to upload learners to a course. It is important to note that this process will send an email to the learner, letting them know that they were added to a course, and if they do not already have an account with us, a second email will be sent that prompts them to create one. NOTE: In accordance with our data privacy policy, the roster will be made anonymous 45 days after the course is completed.
The first method to upload learners is via a Roster Upload with a CSV file.
To do this, you must first navigate to the Attendees section of the course and click the + Upload Roster button. This is also available at the top of the course page.
This will open a second window that allows you to upload a UTF-8 encoded CSV file. Also in this window is a Roster Upload Instructions link that can provide the formatting required to you.
Once you’ve chosen the CSV file and uploaded it, you will want to select where the licenses are pulled from the available options under Consume Attendees From…
Click Upload Roster to complete the upload. (If, for any reason, the upload does not work, a specific error will be provided at the top of this pop-up window.)
The second method to upload learners is to add them one at a time.
To do this, you must first navigate to the Attendees section of the course and click the + Attendee button. This is also available at the top of the course page.
This will open a second window that allows you to input the information of a single attendee and add them to the course.
You will want to select where the licenses are pulled from the available options under Consume Attendees From
Click Add Attendee to add them to the course.
6. (OPTIONAL) Set up the Virtual Classroom Events. If you wish to take advantage of the SAFe Collaborate Platform to help deliver a class in a digital format.
You can add these to your course with the below steps:
Navigate to the Setup Class Activities section under the course
Click + Activities to get started
A new window will open and prompt you to agree to the Collaborate Agreement
Once you have done so, you will want to list a Collaborate Producer under the dropdown menu with that name. This will need to be one of the course instructors or the administrator who set up the course.
Click Add Collaborate Activities to create the event.
You can locate this event under the Implement > Access SAFe Collaborate, and the learners will also need to access it by following this path.
Some additional things to note here are:
The attendees will not appear in the list of attendees in Collaborate until they have accessed Collaborate by the Implement > Access SAFe Collaborate method at least once. You do not need to add them there manually.
Collaborate does not provide any sort of Teleconferencing software. This will need to be arranged by the instructors or admins and communicated to the students via email ahead of the course; it may also be beneficial to include the link to the Virtual Classroom event in this email so learners can have quick access to it.
