Why are you retiring SAFe 5?
As SAFe grows and matures, and as more companies are using SAFe as their way of working, we gain new insight into how practices and principles are implemented and how the Framework must evolve to maintain its effectiveness. We want to be sure we’re providing the most up-to-date guidance based on the real experiences and requirements of our customers. This is why we continually update the Framework.

By retiring SAFe 5, we’ll be able to spend less time maintaining and supporting guidance and systems that are outdated and be in a better position to help our customers excel with SAFe and deliver value to their customers faster and more efficiently.

What is the difference between SAFe 5 and SAFe 6.0?
SAFe 6.0 is a comprehensive update from version 5.1 and includes many new and advanced practices alongside a new Big Picture and terminology updates. The SAFe 6.0 update has six primary themes:

  • Empowering teams and clarifying responsibilities

  • Accelerating value flow

  • Enhancing Business Agility with SAFe across the business

  • Building the future with AI, Big Data, and Cloud

  • Delivering better outcomes with measure and grow and OKRs

This article provides an overview of the updates made in SAFe 6.0.

What are you retiring with SAFe 5?
We’ll retire SAFe 5 courses, SAFe 5 exams, and the SAFe 5 Framework website. Any other resources that haven’t been updated to SAFe 6.0 will be examined on a case-by-case basis to determine if they will be retired or updated.

What is happening to the courses that haven’t been updated to SAFe 6?
There are a few courses that are available in SAFe 5 and haven’t been updated to SAFe 6.0. These courses are being sunsetted and will not be available after we complete our SAFe 5 retirement activities. This FAQ provides more information on those courses and the support being provided through their sunset.

I have licenses for courses from one of the previous versions of SAFe, what should I do?
There are a couple of options available for licenses of courses for previous SAFe versions.

  1. Convert them to SAFe 6.0 licenses. For any course that has a 6.0 counterpart, you can easily exchange these licenses.

  2. You can use them for a SAFe 5.1 class. Be sure to do this before February 27th, 2025 as this is the last day to roster learners for those licenses.

  3. For any other courseware license you are unable to exchange, including SAFe Advanced Scrum Master, SAFe for Government, Agile Software Engineering, or Agile Marketing please contact our support team directly. You can submit a ticket by emailing [email protected]

I have SAFe certifications from previous versions, how can I update them to SAFe 6?
If you have SAFe 4 certifications that you would like to upgrade to SAFe 6 you will first need to complete the SAFe 5 upgrade path. Once you complete this path, those certifications will be SAFe 5 certifications. Then you will need to complete the SAFe 6.0 upgrade path to upgrade all your SAFe 5 certifications to SAFe 6.0.

If you only have SAFe 5 certifications you would like to upgrade to SAFe 6.0, complete the SAFe 6.0 upgrade path to upgrade those certifications.

Alternatively, you can take a SAFe 6.0 course and pass the connected exam to earn a SAFe 6.0 certification.

I took a SAFe 5.0 or SAFe 5.1 course and haven’t gotten certified yet, can I still get certified?
Yes, you can still get certified from the SAFe 5.0 or SAFe 5.1 class you attended. To do so navigate to your learning plan and purchase the exam retake.

All SAFe 5 exams are being retired on June 30th, 2025 so be sure to pass the exam before that date to earn your SAFe 5 certification. After June 30th, 2025 you will need to take a new course to get certified.
